DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS

Here are nine commonly observed differences between leaders and managers, culled from the personal notes I’d mentioned:

1.Leaders create the vision. Managers create goals.

2.Leaders are change agents. Managers maintain the status quo.

3.Leaders are unique and authentic. Managers copy and mimic.

4.Leaders take risks. Managers avoid or control problems, creating risk.

5.Leaders are in it for the long term. Managers are shortterm thinkers.

6.Leaders learn, grow and remain relevant. Managers lean on existing skills.

7.Leaders build trust, loyalty and influence their followers. Managers build systems and processes.

8.Leaders coach, knowing that their followers are capable of doing the job. Managers direct activity.

9.Leaders create fans and fervent promoters. Managers have employees.

As you can see, the notion of empathy runs through the attributes and actions associated with effective leaders. It’s the lubricant that keeps workplace relationships running smoothly. It’s what helps a leader make everyone succeed.

Educator and businessman Stephen Covey, author of the bestselling book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, put it this way: “When you show deep empathy toward others, their defensive energy goes down and positive energy replaces it. That’s when you can get more creative in solving problems.”

The Mexican-American billionaire and philanthropist Daniel Lubetzky said this: “Empathy is one of our greatest tools of business that is most underused.”
